The gardens were so beautiful! At only $5 to get in, it was the best value per hour so far in PV! If you have a chance to go, DO SO! (And yes, bring bug spray!) The fellow at the front gate was selling bug repellant at 80 pesos,and we thought we would be clever, so we asked the people who were just leaving the gardens if there were bugs. They said no, they didn't feel any bites. The mexican said yes, you won't feel them. You won't see them. He pointedly repeated they are "No See-Ums." It's up to you, amigos. Insisting on our cleverness, we again declined the bug repellant.

During our walk through the jungle, we saw some no see-ums, but they seemed harmless enough. Until after lunch. Then we saw pink welts appearing all over our legs. Still, they didn't itch, so that was fine.

Well this morning, let me tell you! Our legs are sooooo itchy! I have one bite on my elbow that's driving me nuts! I have been such a good Elli and haven't scratched at all! I can't wait to go snorkeling today and see if the salt water helps it.

Notes about the Puerto Vallarta Gardens:
They are beautiful and amazing!
The walks take you through deep jungle filled with coffee, vanilla, and cocoa trees. there are giant ficus trees taller than anything I've seen. There's a clean mountain river you can swim in to refresh yourself.
There are pineapple gardens, agave gardens, rose gardens, and a cactus garden.
The hacienda restaurant has excellent staff and a telescope aimed at a nearby bird feeder to watch exotic parrots and Mexican eagles. It also has a wood fired pizza oven which makes absolutely divine pizzas. EAT ONE.
All in all, this was an amazing day and I'm so glad we went. next time we'll be sure to be better prepared to meet the bugs!

Missing Things

Very weird. I woke up this morning, wanting to add some pictures to my Flickr from my camera that I've been toting around Mexico with me, and I couldn't find the USB cable that connects the camera with my laptop. This laptop doesn't have a card reader, or I would just use that. So somewhere in this apartment is a cable without a camera on the end of it... I also lost the pen from my purse, so I can't write down my grocery list. There are unsharpened pencils, but... you see my difficulty.

Right now we're waiting for the restaurant downstairs to send up a jug of water for the water tower. You use to be able to ask the security guard to get it at any time of the day or night, but now we have to wait until the restaurant opens. Ah! It just arrived!

Time for our walk on the beach to see what we can see! Brb with pics, I hope!

Just another sunny day in Mexico

Yesterday was a very special day, as it was my hunny's birthday! We slept in, then I made a huge breakfast of scrambled eggs with tomatoes and gouda cheese on toast. Then we managed to roll ourselves out the door and into the car for a trip to Sayulita. It's only a half hour's drive away.

Sayulita sure has changed a lot since last year! It looks like a lot of money has been spent to make the touristas happier. The main roads have been paved now, and there are many more beach chairs on the sand to rent, as well as more restaurants and shops everywhere. Meh. It went from a quaint Mexican town with some hardcore surfers to a tourist haven. I like that it's not such a grubby little town, but the crowds of out-of-towners made it so we left after only a couple of hours.

At 7pm we had reservations at Trio Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta. It was our first time there, and we will definitely be back! The food was far better then Le Kliff, and the service was better than in pretty much any restaurant I've visited. Ambience was enjoyable, with chill lounge music playing softly and the soft hum of conversation filling the room. I ordered the roasted rabbit, as I had never had a bunny in my tummy before -- and I must say, he was very yummy! :) The duck confit salad was mmmmm amazing and loaded with lots of duck meat. For dessert I had a deconstructed coconut tart, which consisted of a scoop of coconut foam over a layer of shredded coconut, all over some candied nuts and crumbles. Beside it was a scoop of cane sugar ice cream. Perfect stuff! Oh, and their barman was excellent at pouring tasty but not too strong or weak drinks. All told, with a bottle of red wine, three courses each, spanish coffees at the end and apertifs at the beginning, was $1850 pesos. Very fair, I think, since the portions were generous for that kind of a dining experience.

After dinner we strolled the very bustling Malecon before heading back to the condo. All in all, it was a wonderful day!

This is one of the reasons I love Victor's Place in the Puerto Vallarta Marina -- free dessert drink with Kahlua, banana, and a flower for las damas!

This morning we took an ambitious walk down the beach. We were trying to find the Marival, but ended up walking all the way to the Paradise Village, which was over an hour down the beach! Luckily we were slathered in enough sunscreen to last us.

We saw something new, too! Several little rays were flapping through the very edge of the waves at our feet, scooping up little fish! They were so adorable and cute, maybe a foot across their wingspan. Then we saw a Mexican fellow fishing for them and tossing them in a bucket. We could hardly blame him, though. They were plentfiul and plenty willing to come right up to people, even those with fishing gear.

We also saw a sea snake! I had heard they were in the waters around here, but had never seen one. It was a couple feet long with yellow and brown spots, like a rotting banana. It washed up in the surf just a few feet away from us, then disappeared. Scary!

We got "home" at 12:30pm and ate a light lunch of cantelope, banana, tostadas and salsa. Later in the afternoon we ended up at the Marina to yacht-spot. There were a few larger boats, but they were in the private areas of the Marina, so we had to view them from afar. Ah well. We consoled ourselves with some fish ceviche and Pacficos at Victor's. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend a visit to Victor's!

My vacation has officially begun! Yay! We spent all afternoon yesterday at the beach, playing in the water and sitting in the shade, nomming on shrimp ceviche. I could eat that stuff all day! For dinner we went to Victor's Place (Cafe Tacuba) in the Puerto Vallarta Marina. Victor was there and shared a shot of tequila with us, as usual. He's an excellent restauranteur. His place always had people waiting for tables, when the rest of the marina's eateries were barely half full. I highly recommend it if you're in the area. :)

Way down in Mexico

We had a bit of a misadventure on our way down to Mexico. First, our flight through Calgary was wonderful. We arrived at noon and had two hours for a leisurely lunch before our flight down to PVR. Perfect. No American customs to go through, no stress about border guards. It was awesome.

On the flight we were sitting with a very nice lady who was a travel agent, so we learned a lot about the industry. Very interesting stuff!

We land in PVR at about 8pm, no problem. So we stand by the baggage carousel and wait. And wait. And there are two dogs in cages who have been sick on the flight and it stinks up the room. And there are no bags for us. There are a few luggage fellows running around, so one fills out a WestJet lost luggage form for us, and says they will call us tomorrow on my cell phone. Cool, that's fine.

So outside in the parking lot our rental car was supposedly waiting for us. A nice, new, white Jetta. Alas, there is no car meeting that description in the lot. In fact, there are only three cars left in the lot as ours was the last flight of the night and now security is locking up.

A taxi driver comes over to offer us a ride (obviously) but we explain our situation, and he takes us to the girl in the parking toll booth. She has a cell phone so she calls the rental car company. They messed up our dates! oops! So taxi driver drives us to Bucerias where we are given a Dodge Caravan for the night. The company pays for the $40 taxi ride.

Here's the thing: my cell phone was on its last bar of battery life, and the charger was in my checked bags. So at this point it's a race against time.

Tonight our very kind neighbours let us use their land line to call the airport, but it just rang and rang. When we did finally get through, we learned that our bags were there! Yay! They had come in at 5pm today! But no, we could not pick them up. The lady would call us back in 10 minutes with a delivery time. Well, by 9pm we had not received a call and they had not answered any more of our many calls, so we headed to PVR. Inside the airport we learned that WestJet had an office across the street. This meant an adventure with the laterals. If you've never been to Mexico, it's a side street that the shops are on and that you must turn left from, to keep the centre lanes flowing smoothly. Anyway, it took us three drive-bys and a talk with some locals to decide there was no WestJet building in the area. :( So on the way home we nearly hit a stray dog. Nearly.

BUT when we pulled up to our security gate, guess what was there! Both of our suitcases! Yay!! They had been dropped off 15 minutes earlier.

So NOW, 24 hours into our Mexico vacation, we have our clothes unpacked and our rental car organized and our cupboards stocked with most of the food we need. We just also have four toothbrushes, six disposable razors, two tubes of toothpaste... well, you get the idea. The condo is well stocked :)

And I can't wait! I'm in the final crunch here, trying to get my next four weeks of updates lined up so I don't have anything major to upload while I'm away. Yay! The rats are gone!

If you'd been following my Twitter Tweets, you might have noticed a rather odd subplot recently. It seems there was a rat, wait, no, TWO rats living in my walls. Well last night the fellow upstairs put a trap at the entrance to their boulevard loaded up with peanut butter and granola bits. And BLAMMO! Both got snapped in the same trap! They almost got away with it, though -- all the peanut butter was licked off and it seems they had come back to finish off the granola! So yay! No more rats in the walls! The house will still be here when I get back from Mexico and not gnawed to bits, yay!

We just finished putting our garden away for the winter. All the pots are stacked against the wooden tomato frame behind the garage. Interestingly, the pepper plants had very small root systems except for Mr. Habanero -- he had taken over almost his entire pot! Also, I have good news! The garlic cloves and baby onions I had planted seem to be doing well. They have sprouted and I repotted them into the long container I had been using for the beets over the summer. So... home grown garlic next year! How exciting!

Errr... did you hear something? Perhaps there is one rodent left....

More Craigslisting

Still purging our gobs of extra computer parts. So far we've made over $500 on just dumping old motherboards, drives, cases, etc. It feels so good to purge, you know. Almost like there's a weight off my shoulders. I'd ideally like to get down to just what we are currently using, with a few "just in case" parts. No more saying, "I'll keep it because someday I might know somebody who might need it."

I'm looking forward to my trip on Sunday down to San Francisco. I'm going to a little business gathering that is usually quite relaxed and enjoyable. Back home on Wednesday, then OFF on the 17th on my annual sojourn down south to Puerto Vallarta. I can't wait! Woot! Now the key is to stay healthy until then. Three plane rides during flu season will not be fun. :(

So we've been loading up on our vitamins and fruits and veg. Today we had salmon sandwiches for lunch, and tonight I made a vegetarian fettuccine with zucchini, tomatoes, red onion, and mushrooms. I've been taking Michael Pollan's suggestion to heart, and even wrote it (paraphrased) on the white board on my fridge:

"Eat real food,
mostly plants,
and not too much."

It makes sense, and it's easy to repeat in my head when I'm feeling snacky and craving carbs. He advises not to eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food, which is right in line with my own desire to not let scientists and marketers do my cooking for me. He doesn't necessarily advocate giving up meat entirely, which I would not do. Instead, I change the ratio of meat to plants, which is really quite easy.
