Ok, so my laptop died last night. So this morning I checked Future Shop's website on a whim. They had a full loaded-to-the-tits Dell Studio 15 that I've been eyeing for months. For only $1149, too, which is below Dell's price (with coupons) on Dell.ca. So I checked it out. I bought one. Heck, they threw in a 3-in-1 printer for $10!

So I opened up the laptop in the parking lot, thank the computer gods. The box looked new, but there were HUGE scratches across the screen and a gouge/divot out of the case lid.

I examined the box more closely. There was a shipping sticker. It said it was sent from Dell Returns in Ontario to Best Buy's Western distribution center before arriving at the Bridgeport Future Shop. It was unit 3 of 24, sent on August 18th. Odd, n'est pas?

I walked back in and returned the laptop. The guy tried to blame the scratches on me at first, but the manager agreed with me. He suggested I look at the other one they have in stock. I did. Surprise! Even worse scratches and a divot in the centre of the screen! The case exterior was mint, at least. THAT box had the same shipping sticker, but was item 10 of the same batch of 24.

So, do I pay $1400 after taxes for a laptop that is obviously a Dell return/refurbished unit that Future Shop is trying to sell as new? Sadly, no.

I wonder if Dell knows these units are being sold as "new in box" items.

Granted, I have the experience of being in IT for the last 2 decades, but I just won't buy used/refurb computers. Unless you know the person who is selling you their old one, it's impossible to tell what may have happened to that thing (knocked off a table to a concrete floor, dropped in a sink full of soapy water). I much prefer "breaking the seal" on a new unit, knowing if it craps out, I have a warranty to work with. When I'm done with one of my home computers, I clean the hard drive and usually give it to one of my friends' kids.

Smart move on your part to inspect before you left the parking lot... and a bitchslap to the clerk who had the nerve to think you could do that much damage to it just by walking to your car.

I sort agree with you on refurbs. I've done okay with desktops (only tried it a couple of times), but I wouldn't buy a refurb laptop...that just screams trouble.

And, yeah, Elli was brilliant to check the item immediately! I know I wouldn't have done that.

Also, do let Dell know what's going on.

Is FutureShop a division of Best Buy? Because Best Buy has a LONG track record of this sort of problem. When I have to puchase something from them I always open it at the registers, so I don't discover I have a box of floor tiles, not a harddrive (true case) or a used 8 gig drive, instead of a new 150 gig (also true case).

Actually, yes. Future Shop recently was either bought by or joined Best Buy. Holy open box, Batman! That's awful! Thanks for the warning!

One of the reasons that Futureshop was asked to leave the US was for similar issues. They were bringing refurb items in to the US illegaly. They were allowed to buy them to sell as referbs in Canada, but they could not be sold in the US. They would ship them to a store in Canada and then do a "store transfer" to a US location. They also screwed people on their extended warranties. They were selling self backed warranties on items the day before they closed their doors.

Hi! I'm Elli. I'm a pornstar, I guess!

I mean, I do get naked on the internet. I do a lot more than just get naked, too! And yes, people do enjoy membership access at my website at ElliNude.com. But does that make me a pornstar? I have no idea... what do you think?
